The world has changed with the incursion and release of Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft knows this and has now revealed what his precise excitement was when he saw firsthand the potential reach of OpenAI’s platform, ChatGPT.
During the last few months here at FayerWayer we have covered practically any advance of these types of Conversational Artificial Intelligence, where every time we come across a greater number of models.
Between google bard and other platforms, genuine uncertainty has been generated about what the future of employment for entire industries holds, where the possibility of an AI supplanting a position that was previously taken by a human being is more than obvious.
From this perspective, the opinion of the main industry leaders, where Bill Gates is an obligatory reference, is of great interest to us. Now, for better or for worse, we know how a particular event in the recent history of AIs lived. But first let’s cover some basics.
What is AP Bio and why Bill Gates was impressed that ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence passed this exam
In August 2022 Bill Gates witnessed a demonstration of the potential of ChatGPT when OpenAI organized an experiment where they put their Artificial Intelligence to answer the AP biology exam, better known as AP Bio. Needless to say, the result was brutal, but there is a story behind it.
In a general sense, AP Bio is an advanced level course that is taught in some high schools in the United States.
Its objective is to prepare students for the Biology exam of the College Boardwhich can give them college credit.
AP Bio covers topics such as the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, ecology, and animal and plant physiology.
So it requires a high level of scientific understanding and reasoning, as well as knowledge of laboratory skills.
Well now, according to Gates in the most recent episode of the podcast unconfuse me from Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan in June 2022 Gates first tested his then-new partners’ chatbot, OpenAI, and was not impressed.
“My perspective was that it was something like, ‘Yeah, he’s kind of a wise jerk. I don’t think it’s practical.’” So he gave OpenAI CEO Sam Altman a challenge for ChatGPT: pass the AP Bio with the highest possible score.
Two months later Gates returned to see how the AI now scored the highest possible on the exam. So his excitement was one and nothing more: “It’s the most impressive demonstration I’ve ever seen.”
This is how Bill Gates contributed to that historic moment in the history of ChatGPT.
