Bill Gates gives thumbs up for Artificial Intelligence, building on the success of OpenAI with ChatGPT. The billionaire analyzed the current scenario and the future regarding technology, in a text on his Gates Notes blog. How will the world change in five or ten years thanks to her?
“In my entire life, I have seen two technology demos that I thought were revolutionary. The first time was in 1980, when I met a graphical user interface, the forerunner of all modern operating systems, including Windows (…) The second big surprise came last year (…) It was GPT”.
Gates refers to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s Artificial Intelligence chatbot.
But beyond the chatbot in particular, the creator of Microsoft pointed to Artificial Intelligence in general. He expressed in his writing four positive situations and one negative that will have AI as the protagonist.
The productivity
“The development of Artificial Intelligence is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet and the mobile phone. Consider Bill Gates.
“It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get healthcare and communicate with each other. Entire industries will reorient themselves around it. Businesses will differ from each other in how they use it.”
Health and Artificial Intelligence
According to Bill Gates, Artificial Intelligence will break with inequality in health.
“Artificial Intelligence can reduce some of the world’s greatest inequities. Globally, the worst inequality is in health: five million children under the age of five die every day (…) It’s hard to imagine a better use of Artificial Intelligence than saving the lives of children.”
Gates believes that AI will help certain basic medical prescriptions, to give advice on how to treat some health problems and to decide what needs further treatment and what does not. It will also serve to create and improve medicines.
The education
In the case of education, Bill Gates raises the boost that AI can give to mathematics.
“In the United States, the best opportunity to reduce inequality is to improve education, particularly by making students successful in mathematics,” considers the philanthropist. “Evidence shows that having basic math skills helps students be successful, no matter what career they choose.”
“But the achievements in mathematics are low across the country, especially for African-Americans, Latinos, and low-income students. Artificial Intelligence can help change that.”
Climate change and Artificial Intelligence
Gates also aims to use Artificial Intelligence to combat climate change.
“Climate change is another topic in which I am convinced that Artificial Intelligence can make the world more equal”, points out the creator of Microsoft. “The injustice of climate change is that the people who are suffering from it are the poorest and the ones who contributed the least to the problem.”
“I’m still thinking and learning about how AI can help, but I suggest a few areas with a lot of potential.”
The Danger Area of Artificial Intelligence
One area that concerns not only Bill Gates, but almost everyone, is the use of AI in various aspects of life.
“Any new technology that is that disruptive is bound to make people uncomfortable, and that is certainly true with Artificial Intelligence. I understand why: It raises tough questions about the workforce, the legal system, privacy, bias, and more. AIs also make factual errors and experience ‘hallucinations’.
For Gates, it is a matter of time before many improvements arrive. However, there will always be these kinds of doubts around technology.
In addition, it recognizes that governments and authorities they can help further shape the area of AI development.
