After going from more to less with his trilogy of Halloween, production house Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green have the complex task of reviving another horror classic for the new generations. Here everything you need to know about The Exorcist: Believers.
What is it about The Exorcist: Believers?
Exactly 50 years ago, William Friedkin shocked audiences around the world with The Exorcist. Based on William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name, this production shattered box office records at the time and earned 10 Oscar nominations, including being the first horror work to be nominated for Best Picture.
Now, David Gordon Green offers us a new chapter in this chilling saga that, like its incarnation Halloweenwill be a direct sequel to the original 1973 film.
Universal Pictures offers the following synopsis of The Exorcist: Believers:
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in an earthquake in Haiti 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised his daughter Angela on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine disappear into the woods and return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, they set off a series of events that will force Victor to face the ultimate in evil and, in his terror and despair, search for the only one. Living person to have witnessed something similar: Chris MacNeil.”
Production team and cast
The Exorcist: Believers It is directed by David Gordon Green, based on a script that he himself co-wrote with Peter Sattler (C.tomp X-Ray), and based in turn on a story he conceived together with Scott Teems (halloween kills: The night is not over yet) and Danny McBride (new trilogy of Halloween).
In a conversation with total filmsthe filmmaker clarified that, although this sixth installment will affect the continuity of the franchise, the rest of the previous installments have a place within the canon.

The cast is led by the Oscar nominee, Leslie Odom, Jr. (one night in miami), as Victor Fielding; Lydia Jewett (good girls) as his daughter Angela and debutante Olivia Marcum like Katherine. The film also stars Jennifer Nettles (Harriet) and Norbert Leo Butz (blood line) as Katherine’s parents, as well as Ann Dowd (hereditary) in the role of a neighbor of Victor and Angela.
On the other hand, Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, the woman who was forever altered after what happened to her daughter five decades ago. And speaking of the unforgettable Regan, linda blair is involved as a “technical consultant” for child actresses, although it is rumored that he would also be part of the ensemble in a tiny cameo.
This is a production of Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, in collaboration with David Robinson and James G. Robinson (involved in the series The Exorcist) for Morgan Creek Entertainment. Gordon Green, McBride, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek and Atilla Yücer serve as executive producers.

David Gordon Green’s film opens in Mexican theaters on October 5, 2023.
believers is planned as the first part of a new trilogy of the Exorcist. The second chapter titled The Exorcist: Liar It will hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
