Battlefield 2042 seems to be the first step in what could be the future of this great franchise. As you well know, the Battlefields have always had a campaign mode, but the new DICE title will only have multiplayer available, in addition to the Battlefield Portal, a new game mode will offer us the possibility of enjoying content from previous installments, such as maps, vehicles and much more from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.
As Battlefield 2042 is a 100% multiplayer-focused game, over the years it could see new additions, such as a Battle Royale mode or new modes and maps in the future. The latter is very clear that it will end up being added. Many EA franchises seem to be reinventing themselves little by little, and Battlefield 2042 is a clear example of change. Therefore, in this transition to free to plays which is becoming so fashionable, we have now met through an EA investor meeting (via IGN), that Battlefield could become a game-as-a-service in the future.
The extensive content of the Battlefield 2042 Season Pass will be free
Battlefield could become a game-as-a-service in the future, says EA
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson commented on the future of the Battlefield franchise:
We should think of Battlefield as a game as a service. What we’re doing for the launch of this game is really revolutionizing and reinventing what all of our epic-scale warfare is in the context of the game. On top of that, you’ve heard us announce the Battlefield Portal, which is really starting to lean towards user-generated content and will drive deep, long-term engagement in the game.
It was not clarified if this free to play / game as a service model will be added in Battlefield 2042 or in the next title of the franchise that we assume will arrive in several years. Finally, we remind you that Battlefield 2042 will arrive on October 21, 2021 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S, in addition to PC, PlayStation 4 and PS5.
