Batman: Harley and Ivy is a fun and interesting review of everything for which its protagonist, despite being an insane supervillain, has become the darling of the fans.
A funny madness that invaded the comic
Harley Quinn is not only one of the few characters created within the small screen -he first appeared in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series-, which has been integrated more than successfully and definitively into the canon of the DC Universe; but he has also done it starring in comics that maintain and enrich the traits that define him of origin.
Don’t Miss: Will Scarlett Johansson Be the Next Poison Ivy?
Of course, among them stands out this one that was perpetrated neither more nor less than by its own creators, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, who in addition to succeeding in transferring the vitality of the cheeky humor they found through animation, also know how to take advantage of it to the possibilities offered by the world of cartoons.
Here, through sequences with the spirit of a comic strip, playing with the small and crazy actions in the background, which contrast with the action in the foreground, they give rise to a comedy that finds dynamism by alternating the stridency of the dialogues, with the silences that give full prominence to the gesture.
United by a plant
But that’s not all, another of the great successes is that while developing a simple but very consistent and solid plot, with Harley and a Poison Ivy striving to seize a “Zombie plant” that will allow them to dominate Gotham City; they dimension the love-hate that is established between them, which goes from the places of camaraderie, to the complicity of the thugs, projecting at times an evident sexual tension.
In fact, it is precisely from the latter that the proposal allows itself fun daring with respect to the clichés of female coexistence typical of superhero comics, between jokes and jokes far from glamor and the usual reluctance, throwing unusual implications, such as the one that shows the peculiar and too intimate relationship that the already mentioned supervillain of green color, maintains with the plants.
It is also appreciated that although Batman makes an appearance, the dependence of the plot with respect to his figure is minimal, thus finding a greater identity.
A collectible Harley
Finally, there are the striking additions of the edition that in itself represents a great blow of nostalgia due to its large size and pagination.
Starting with the Christmas specials that are ideal for unleashing Harley’s twisted, childlike evil personality; in addition to a sympathetic look at what a day in his life becomes, with the participation in the pencils of the late Dan de Carlo, whose style of classic expressiveness in the “Archie” style -was an emblematic creative of the franchise-, It suits the irony to which the passage alludes wonderfully.
That said, it is clear that Batman: Harley and Ivy, is a fun and interesting review of everything for which its protagonist, despite being an insane supervillain, has become the darling of the fans.
