The storm tropical karl will cause heavy to intense rains this Wednesday in the states of the Gulf of Mexicowhere it could make landfall on Friday, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
In the latest warning from the SMN, Karl was located 275 kilometers east-northeast of Tuxpan, and 300 kilometers north-northeast of the port of Veracruz, both municipalities in the state of Veracruz.
The cyclonewhich formed this Tuesday, has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, gusts of 85 kilometers per hour and is moving north-northwest at 9 kilometers per hour, according to the agency of the National Water Commission (Conagua).
Karl will advance in the coming days towards Veracruzwhere it could make landfall this Friday, although as a remaining low pressure, according to the SMN projection.
The storm, which is in interaction with the entry of moisture through a low pressure area with cyclonic potential located south of oaxacawill cause “intense punctual” rains, from 75 to 150 millimeters, in regions of Puebla and Veracruz.
“Very heavy” rainfall is also forecast in areas of Chiapas, Warrior Y oaxacaas well as “strong” in Campeche, Tabasco Y Tamaulipas.
Likewise, Karl’s circulation will promote wind gusts of up to 60 kilometers per hour and waves of 1 to 3 meters high on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
The rainfall could be accompanied by electric shocks, strong winds and possible hailstorms, and cause landslides, increased levels of rivers and streams, overflows and floods in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states,” the SMN warned.
Could Karl turn into a hurricane?
On the other hand, it warned of a phenomenon with a 20% probability of evolving into a tropical cyclone 120 kilometers south-southwest of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.
Karl is the 13th named cyclone this Atlantic season, including Hurricanes Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Ian and Julia.
Last May, the Mexican authorities predicted the formation of up to 40 named cyclones by 2022, which they described as an “active season”, and they predicted that of the total number of tropical cyclones generated, at least 5 would impact the country.
