You cannot accelerate the acquisition of balance by the little one, but you can help him from the first months to acquire it.
Balance is not an innate sense. The baby will achieve this skill over time and with practice and is not fully achieved until the age of five. A child who walks, jumps, moves, has had to work hard, has gone through a long process of maturation and, above all, through training that begins from the first months of life.
Falls and trips are inevitable and will lead you to discover what parts of the body you have to exert force to stay seated, crawl, walk, run, jump, etc.
The ages of the child’s balance
8-9 months: remains sitting without support. It doesn’t fall off unless you’re tired. Many little ones start to crawl.
10 months: sits unaided and with legs straight. You can do an activity while sitting: playing with a toy in your hands.
13 months: remains standing, holding on to something. Some kids just need to grab the finger of an adult, even if they don’t lean on it. Knowing that it is there gives them security.
12-16 months: Most children begin to walk at this age without the help of an adult or the support of a piece of furniture. Some extend their hands to control balance.
16-18 months: learn to walk backwards. It is not something too useful, but it helps them develop a lot of balance. To check that your child already has this ability, do this test: when he is standing, make a move to scare him. If you stood still or dropped to the ground before, you will now take a few steps backwards trying to avoid the hand.
19-21 months: watch out, he’s become reckless. If only a few months ago he took his first steps fearfully and with great care, now he is able to climb into a chair and stand there waiting.
2 years: can kick a ball. To do this you have to support yourself on one leg. Great achievement!
