Can an electric car with a range extender be a benchmark in the automotive industry? Here are some of the keys to this technology through the Audi RS Q E-Tron.
For years, the electric car has become one of the most outstanding solutions to reduce pollution in large cities. The zero emission of polluting particles in the urban area means that we are facing a bet that can be a benchmark in the coming years. Now, what other changes can enhance the use of this type of technology compared to the conventional? Discovery of range extenders may be critical.
Considering the technological reality of an internal combustion engine, it should be noted that we are facing a very inefficient form of mobility. The key to this is shown by the loss of performance that occurs throughout the combustion time. The vast majority of the energy produced during the entire process is converted into heat, which has no effect on scrolling. An electric motor is completely the opposite.
This leads us to think that the performance of an electric car, based on this procedure, is much more efficient than a conventional mechanic. That said, what would happen if an electric car worked with the benefits of mechanics of these characteristics and the batteries were loaded by a traditional internal combustion propellant? This is exactly what the Audi RS Q E-Tron proposes, the model that participated in the Dakar in the last edition.
Commonly known as an extended range electric car, it offers all the virtues offered by a vehicle without polluting emissions compared to a conventional one. The main differentiation lies in the use of a small block to power lithium ion batteries. This new alternative may have great potential in the market. Naturally, the presence of this unique vehicle in this test will only emphasize its reliability and leadership.
Let’s see, therefore, why we are facing a technology that may be essential to explain the electric car in the coming years, why its performance matches the virtues of the ecological transition and, of course, to what extent a strategy is required that is related to the use of alternatives to accelerate the change that is currently taking place.
A vehicle capable of facing all kinds of adversity
On many occasions, the idea that this electrical technology is, in a certain sense, somewhat special in terms of reliability and, above all, safety, has been criticized. After all, the problem always seems to have been centered on the lack of autonomy. The Audi RS Q E-Tron has proven to be a benchmark in terms of variables above, having to add off-road skills as an additional differential element.
Up to 3 units participated in one of the most difficult events in the field of motorsports. In the entire test, a total of 4 stage victories were achieved, which demonstrates the value of a technology of these characteristics in the market. What’s more, autonomy itself was not a problem, since there were batches that exceeded 900 kilometers, a distance that is still very difficult to achieve in a conventional electric car. Here is the key to its potential.
In relation to this particular model, each of the participating units had a set of 52 kWh batteries. The provision of a 2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, however, is what was in charge of maintain a sufficient charge in the batteries as to maintain the race pace. In this way, each of the engines present in the vehicles performed its function in the best of cases. Thanks to this, the performance was differential.
A practice with multiple future applications in conventional mobility
The use of this practice can offer great advantages in the future. On the one hand, the user will be more proactive in purchasing a technology with these characteristics by not depending excessively on chargers. Manufacturers, on the other hand, will have higher revenues mainly due to the highest demand required by conventional mechanics regarding internal combustion. As can be read in the specialized portal InsideEV’s, the benefits are remarkable.
In this sense, would it be worth opting for this type of technology? Certainly, there are solutions of these characteristics on the market. However, it is not the most standardized. Some specialized companies are offering the incorporation of internal combustion engines in order to help the electrical mechanics to offer additional performance. Despite this, it is early to see a great deployment in the industry.
Take the example of Tesla. Can you imagine incorporating a small displacement gasoline or diesel engine in the trunk at the front? Without a doubt, the vehicle would have a greater range of use. Certainly, Tesla will never offer this type of solution due, above all, to the philosophy of the brand, but it is not unreasonable that we see it in the future in other manufacturers in the sector.
