Horror movies undoubtedly catch children’s attention, but could they influence their behavior?
AT WHAT AGE CAN CHILDREN WATCH HORROR MOVIES?
Children are the main fans of the big screen, however, we must be very careful with the content that we allow them to see, both in the cinema and at home, as not all films are suitable for them, especially those that contain scenes sexual, homicide, science fiction or horror.
In this case, we will mainly talk about the horror ones since it should be noted that many times the little ones are very curious to discover the identity of the popular characters that are often mentioned by older brothers, cousins or schoolmates.
BUT WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME FOR CHILDREN TO WATCH MOVIES LIKE THIS?
We can allow our children to watch horror films when they have the ability to differentiate between reality and fiction, in this way they will be able to enjoy the story, knowing that those characters cannot really harm them.
As a study by the University of Texas shows, infants learn to distinguish their reality from fiction, until they are 7 years old, which does not mean that we can take them to see IT or The Devil Doll immediately, since everything they have learned little by little, can collapse in an instant.
Many experts in child psychiatry, such as Dr. Steven Schlozman, explain that the appropriate age to watch horror movies is 11 years old.
It should be borne in mind that we are all different, our nervous system does not work in the same way and is linked to the personality of each person, so there may be 8-year-old children who can without any problem endure any horror story, but on the other hand, there are 10-year-old children who can leave the room very disturbed.
If your little one is very insistent about experimenting with a horror film, explain that there are stages for everything, including watching movies, for now, you can enjoy a wide range of children’s stories.
