Conventional routers typically offer about four Ethernet ports free, more than enough for most users, although sometimes, if we have many devices such as televisions, consoles, sound equipment, computers, etc. that we want to connect by cable, we will probably have to opt for an additional accessory such as a switch.
These teams offer us the possibility of expanding the number of Ethernet ports available in a simple way, simply by plugging the cables into their ports. It is for example the case of the recently announced ASUSTOR Switch’nstor (model ASW205T), a switch that promises to offer us 5 ports at 2.5 Gbps.
With dimensions of 28 x 140 x 90 mm and a weight of 350 grams, the equipment is designed with a metal casing that can be placed on the table or hung on the wall and with passive heat sinks that help reduce electricity consumption, the equipment having a cost of only 10 watts at full capacity.
The equipment mounts inside a Realtek RTL8731 chipset and another RTL8221B with a switching capacity of 25Gbps (Full-Duplex), a total data flow of 12.5Gbps and a packet forwarding rate of 18.6Mpps.
In addition, it is completely “plug and play”, no need to install, configure or manage anything. You just have to connect Cat 5e cables or higher and we will be able to access those interconnection speeds of 2.5 Gbps. Of course it supports lower speeds of 1 Gbps and 100 Mbps to maintain compatibility with older equipment.
Price and availability
The new ASUSTOR Switch’nstor will go on sale at the end of the year at online distributors and authorized physical stores for a price yet to be determined.
