Mexico recorded the highest number of divorces in the last 10 years in 2022when it recorded a total of 166,766, an annual increase of 11.4%, revealed this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The divorce rate per 1,000 inhabitants was also the highest since 2013reaching 1.86, according to the report of the autonomous institute.
The 2022 data compares to 2021’s 149,675 divorces and the rate of 1.69.
Of the total divorces last year, only 9.5% were resolved administratively and 90.5% resorted to judicial means, the report detailed.

Regarding the reasons for separation, 66.5% were “uncaused divorces”, followed by “mutual consent” with 31.7%, and “separation from the marital home for more than a year, with or without justified cause”, with 0.7%.
The average age of divorce for women it was 40.6 years and for men it was 43 years.
The entities that registered the highest divorce rates per 1,000 inhabitants were Campeche with 4.8, Sinaloa with 3.7 and Nuevo León with 3.6.
The lowest were in Veracruz (0.76), Oaxaca (0.92) and Puebla (1.17).
More divorces, more marriages
On the other hand, Inegi reported an annual increase of 11.9% in the number of new marriages, which reached 507,052, a figure higher than the 453,081 in 2021 and the highest in the last five years.
At the national level, There were 5.7 marriages per 1,000 inhabitantsthe highest rate since 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.
The highest rates were recorded in Quintana Roo (9.5), Sinaloa (7.52) and Guanajuato (7.3).
And the minor ones in Mexico City (3.77), Puebla (3.82) and Hidalgo (3.88).
The Inegi reported that the average age at marriage has increased.
In men it changed from 29.8 years in 2013 to 34.1 in 2022, while in women it went, in the same period of time, from 26.9 years to 31.3.
The autonomous institute also reported 5,829 same-sex marriages in 2022, of which 2,353 were between men and 3,476 between women.
