Although the last few years have been difficult for Marvel, mainly due to attacks from other members of the industry, the actors of the MCU have not been silent. In recent weeks, actresses like Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira They have stood up for the franchise. And now it is Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) who defends Marvel, but from Quentin Tarantino. For better or for worse, his response ended up generating another controversy.
Tarantino recently participated in the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave. There he explained that Marvel actors cannot be considered movie stars. For the filmmaker, it is the characters like Thor and Captain America who generate the success of his films, not the actors. Immediately, many Marvel fans criticized the statements. Simu Liu, one of the new protagonists of the MCU, also took the opportunity to go against Tarantino. And incidentally, he lashed out at Martin Scorsese.
Through his Twitter account, the actor wrote:
“If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom were Tarantino and Scorsese, he would never have had the chance to star in a $400+ million movie. I am in awe of his cinematic genius. They are transcendent authors. But they can’t point fingers at me or at anyone.”
Immediately, Liu’s supporters endorsed his words. However, many others were also surprised by the actor’s decision to consider himself a “movie star.” Although $400 million dollars is a figure that many other films would envy, the truth is that Simu Liu has not starred in other projects. Obviously, it is not a certainty that his name can attract large amounts of audience. Likewise, many considered that his words were a mistake. He would practically be closing the doors to work with directors of such prestige.
“No movie studio is or will be perfect. But I’m proud to work with one who has made sustained efforts to improve diversity on screen by creating heroes who empower and inspire people from all communities everywhere. I also loved the “Golden Age”… but it was white as hell.”
Do you think Simu Liu exceeded his words towards Quentin Tarantino? Obviously, the attacks on Marvel will continue. The premiere of each MCU movie revives the issue and generates opinions of all kinds. Who will be the next celebrity to criticize the movies commanded by Kevin Feige?
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
