Apple on ban in Brazil
This Tuesday the company led by Tim Cook announced that it will appeal a Brazilian order that prohibits it from selling iPhones without a battery charger, rejecting claims that the company offers an incomplete product to consumers.
The Ministry of Justice fined Apple $2.38 million and ordered the company to cancel sales of the iPhone 12 and newer models, in addition to suspending the sale of any iPhone model that does not come with a charger.
Let us remember that since 2021, the firm’s new iPhone models do not come with the battery charger, an option that the brand defined at the time as an effort to achieve its environmental goals.
It is worth mentioning that the flagship product of the brand is the iPhone, which according to its data in the first fiscal quarter of 2022, the company earned approximately US$71.6 billion from the sale of iPhones worldwide.
In that sense, in the order, published on Tuesday, September 6 in the official newspaper of the southern country, the ministry argued that the iPhone lacked an essential component in a “deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers”.
Authorities rejected Apple’s argument that the practice was intended to reduce carbon emissions, saying there is no evidence that selling the smartphone without a charger offers environmental protections.
As part of a response, the Copernicus company said it would continue to work with Brazil’s consumer protection agency Senacon to “resolve their concerns,” and said it would appeal the decision.
“We have already won several court rulings in Brazil on this matter and we are confident that our customers are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices,” Apple said.
Technology companies, especially social network companies, are highly questioned by the world’s governments, where they only seek the safety of people. One of them is Facebook, which has been mentioned on numerous occasions in countries of the European Union and has been required to improve the privacy of the data that they request from their users, leading to direct responses from Mark Zuckerberg.
In that sense, this shows that the importance of the consumer is an objective of many governments, where they protect them from brands that could be abusing their products and services and causing some damage.
