Tech giant Apple has restricted the company’s use of the popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT for fear that its sensitive data could be compromised.
A story in The Wall Street Journal revealed that an internal document directed at Apple employees had banned the use of the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT and similar AI tools while the company developed its own AI technology.
According to the document, the iPhone developer is concerned that workers will use the programs and expose sensitive company information.
He also mentioned a restriction on GitHub’s Copilot AI tool, a Microsoft-owned application that automates writing software code.
This internal ban comes after the ChatGPT app debuted for iOS on the Apple app store on May 18.
The new app is currently available to iPhone and iPad users in the United States, but it intends to roll out to other countries “in the coming weeks,” along with an Android version coming “soon.”
Along with Apple, other large companies have restricted the internal use of ChatGPT. 2 of May, Samsung sent a memo to its employees prohibiting the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
In Samsung’s case, the policy followed an incident in which Samsung staff uploaded “sensitive code” to the platform.
Samsung told employees using such apps on personal devices not to upload any company information or they could face “disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.”
In addition to Samsung and Apple, companies like JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup have also banned the internal use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
Many companies that prohibit their employees from using AI chatbots are also creating their own applications. Beginnings of May, Apple CEO Time Cook said the company plans to “weave” AI into its products.
