- On World Password Day, a long-awaited agreement by users.
- Apple, Google and Microsoft hope to eliminate passwords.
- The tech giants want to implement the system in early 2023.
right in the world password daywhich is celebrated this May 5, the big technology companies Apple, Google and Microsoft announced that they have committed to create common support for users to login without passwords.
This will encompass all platforms of these companiesboth mobile and desktop, including browsers.
The idea is that this happens before the end of 2023.
If it becomes a reality, passwordless logins will be a reality in operating systems, environments, platforms and applications such as Android, iOS, Chrome, Edge, Safari, Windows and macOS.
Kurt Knight, head of Platform Product Marketing at Apple, said they are working to “establish new and more secure login methods that offer better protection and eliminate password vulnerabilities.”
They seek, he said, “products that offer maximum security and a transparent user experience.”
In a blog post, Google said the idea is that the phone is the main “unlocker” of the set of applications and environments.
This can be by entering a PIN, drawing a pattern, or using fingerprint unlock. Any of these methods will be sufficient to start sessions in the web services without the need to enter passwords later.
Google says that this will be possible thanks to the use of unique cryptographic tokens shared between the phone and websites.
By making login dependent on physical devices, the intent is for the user to simultaneously benefit from the simplicity and security of the process.
More trouble for hackers
According to technology, without a password, there will be no need to remember the login details for each of the services nor compromise security by reusing the same passwords on different sites.
According to what was released this Thursday by the three technology companies, a system without a password will make it much more difficult for hackers to compromise login data remotely because they will need access to physical devices.
Vasu Jakkal, head of Security and Privacy at Microsoft, stressed that there will be compatibility between the platforms. “For example, users will be able to log in to a Google browser (Chrome), running in the Microsoft environment (Windows), using a password to access Apple devices (iPhone),” he explained.
