We take an in-depth look at the cameras on the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro to see their differences.
With its new generation of iPhone, Apple has made an important leap in terms of the rear cameras of the devices, and this year we see important differences between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Traditionally, the “basic iPhone” have shared two of the sensors of the “iPhone Pro”, but that does not happen with the iPhone 13.
The sensors that incorporate the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 are different from those of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in terms of size and photographic capabilities. Therefore, the iPhone 13 Pro will take better photos and videos than the iPhone 13, especially in poor lighting conditions.
What cameras have the iPhone 13
Precisely because of their differences, it is good to compare both camera modules. The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 have exactly the same sensors, and the same happens with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which has the same sensor configuration.
Cameras of the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13
IPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 feature a module with two rear cameras. We have a sensor wide angle and an ultra wide angle sensor. In this case we don’t have a telephoto camera so we don’t have optical zoom. Both cameras are protected by a sapphire crystal.
The diagonal arrangement has been used to accommodate the new sensors. Apple says the new ultra-wide angle shows more detail in low-light photos and that the wide angle captures 47% more light. We also have optical image stabilization by sensor shift.
These are the technical specifications of the cameras on the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13:
- Wide angle camera: 12-megapixel sensor, a seven-element lens and f / 1.6 aperture.
- Ultra wide angle camera: 12 megapixel sensor, a five-element lens, f / 2.4 aperture and 120º field of view.
Cameras of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
In the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max we keep the module with three rear cameras, which is now larger due to the size of the sensors. We have a wide angle lens, an ultra wide angle and a telephoto sensor that allows a 3x optical zoom. We also have the LiDAR sensor for better depth detection.
Apple says that the wide-angle camera of the iPhone 13 Pro lets through up to 2.2 times more light in photos and videos and the ultra wide angle lets through up to 92% more light. These are the specifications of the cameras of the iPhone 13 Pro.
- Wide angle camera: 12 megapixel sensor, a seven-element lens and f / 1.5 aperture.
- Ultra wide angle camera: 12 megapixel sensor, a six-element lens, f / 1.8 aperture and 120º field of view.
- Telephoto Camera: 12-megapixel sensor, six-element optics, f / 2.8 aperture and 77mm focal length for 3x zoom.
Exclusive options for the iPhone 13 Pro cameras
These features are exclusive to the iPhone 13 Pro:
- Apple ProRAW. You can take native RAW photos with the Apple format.
- ProRes. Allows users to record and edit in ProRes or Dolby Vision.
- Macro photography. The ultra-wide-angle camera on the Pro models can focus down to 2cm.
- 3x optical zoom. Due to the telephoto sensor.
- 15x digital zoom. Thanks again to the telephoto sensor.
- LiDAR. Sensor capable of measuring depth.
- Portrait mode compatible with night mode. A function made possible by LiDAR.
What’s new in cameras compatible with all iPhone 13 models
All these new camera features are compatible with the four iPhone 13 models:
- Cinema mode. A kind of portrait mode on video. This new mode is released with the iPhone 13 and is compatible with all models. The mode creates great depth-of-field transitions giving your videos a cinematic look. You will see incredible depth effects that are applied automatically, and that you can also modify later.
- Smart HDR 4. Recognizes up to four people in a scene and optimizes contrast, lighting, and even skin tones for each person so everyone looks their best.
- Photographic styles. Apple has implemented these photographic retouching that are applied to all layers of the photo, unlike the classic filters that we find in other apps. In this way, you can give your photos a very personal touch, without the natural colors disappearing.
This is everything you need to know about cameras of the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. This year we see notable differences between the two types of models.
