The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reiterated this Monday that there is a space agreement between his government and Russiawhich was signed since September last year, but denied that this will be used for espionage.
A scandal is being made because there is talk that Mexico is allowing Russian satellites to be used for Mexican airspace and North America. The truth is that these agreements are signed with all countries and they do not have the purpose of spying on anyone or affecting the sovereignty of this nation,” said the president during his morning press conference from the National Palace.
López Obrador thus referred to the information on a document published on the official legal information portal of the Russian Government, in which President Vladimir Putin ratified the intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Mexico on cooperation in space research for peaceful purposes.

According to the information, the agreement provides, in particular, the installation of Russian Glonass systems and an optical-electronic system for the prevention of dangerous space situations in Mexico.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico accepted that the agreement exists, however, pointed out that it has not yet entered into force and denied that this contemplates the installation of Russian systems to prevent dangerous space situations in the country.

This Monday, López Obrador reiterated that Mexico is neutral in the face of the war between Russia and Ukraine and even recalled that he had sent a peace proposal to the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) last September.
To us that they do not get involved in their affairs. Mexico has a policy of neutrality and what we want is a peaceful solution to that controversy as established by our constitution”, he pointed out.
He also predicted that after the next elections in the United States, the war situation between Russia and Ukraine will improve.
I believe that things are going to improve a lot once the elections in the United States are over, I have that confidence (…) hopefully and the aggressions will not escalate and then things will calm down and peace will be reached, “he said.
