The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorhighlighted this Friday a “historic” reduction in poverty after the report of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval) which showed that 8.9 million Mexicans ceased to be poor from 2020 to 2022.
The Coneval, which was created for that purpose (to measure poverty), also reaffirmed that there has been a historical decrease in poverty and inequality in the time that we have been in government (since 2018),” said the president in his daily press conference.
López Obrador referred to the report on Thursday by Coneval, the body in charge of the official measurement of poverty in Mexico, which counted 46.8 million Mexicans in a situation of poverty in 2022, almost 16% less than the 55.7 million in 2020.

In the country of 126 million inhabitants, the percentage of the population in a situation of poverty dropped to 36.3% in 2022 compared to the proportion of 43.9% in 2020.
The president asserted that this shows that poverty has been reduced in a way that has not been achieved since 1984.
It shows that our strategy has worked, which can be summed up in one sentence: for the good of all, the poor first. And there is less poverty and less inequality in our country, this is a great achievement, I believe that this is the main objective of any government, to achieve justice and happiness for the people”, he said.
Mexico had added 3.8 million poor people in 2020 due to the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemicand at that time López Obrador questioned the measurement of the Coneval.
But now the agency showed that poverty also decreased compared to the previous measurement of 2018, with a reduction of 5.1 million poor people since then.
Despite the positive figures, the agency warned that the most common deficiency was lack of access to social security, which affected 50.2% of the population, 64.7 million people.
This occurred amid the disappearance of Seguro Popular, a service that provided medical care to the population without social security that López Obrador replaced first with the Institute of Health for Well-being (Insabi) and now with a program of the Mexican Social Security Institute called “IMSS Well-being”.
The commitment we have in terms of health is that, before the end of my term, we are going to have one of the best health systems in the world, the right to health is going to be guaranteed”, he commented in this regard.
