The Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradordefended this Tuesday the policy that considers natural gas as “clean energy” despite criticism from environmental associations.
This has already been done internationally because one thing is what is desirable and another is what is possible. It is desired that fossil fuels are no longer used, that oil or derivatives are not used, but the transition process or going to clean, renewable energy takes time, ”he argued in his daily press conference.
The president referred to the decree of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), that last May the regulation changed to consider clean energy that generated with natural gas.

The modification occurs within the framework of the energy policy of López Obradorwho has changed the rules to favor state companies, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).
But the new regulation “stops the energy transition” from Mexico, which promised to generate 35% of its energy with renewable sources by 2024according to a position of the Mexican Center for Environmental Law (CEMDA), Greenpeace Mexico, Climate Initiative of Mexico (ICM), and Nuestro Futuro.
The actions taken by the CRE in this matter once again leave the president of Mexico and our country in a very bad light. With the application of this agreement, the energy transition in the electricity sector in Mexico is slowed down (even more) and with this the human right to a healthy environment is violated,” they warned.
López Obrador asserted that he supports that “the cars are electric, that lithium batteries are used, that there is more and more wind and solar energy”, but he alleged “that they are processes” that take time.
Although he acknowledged that gas is indeed a fossil fuel, he also pointed to the existence of the energy crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine, accusing China, the United States and Germany of using coal.
That is why it is decreed that gas is an energy in transition towards clean energy. An energy (policy) that (considers) gas as a fuel that can be used and is not considered dirty energy or energy of oil origin, ”he sentenced.
