The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obradorstated this Tuesday that the budget approved on Monday for 2024, a year marked by the presidential elections, will allow him to finish “all the works” before the end of his six-year term.

The Mexican president celebrated the vote in the Chamber of Deputies on his budgetwhich was approved on Monday night with 262 votes in favor, 216 against and one abstention.
After this approval, López Obrador hopes to complete some of his most controversial works, such as the Mayan Trainhe Interoceanic Corridor and the Tulum Airportbefore ending his term in October 2024.
The budget causes controversy for contemplating an amount of almost 9.1 billion pesos, 4.2% more than in 2023, of which almost 20% will be paid with debt and with the largest fiscal deficit in three decadesaccording to the opposition.

Of that amount for next year, marked by the 2024 presidential elections, just over 67% will be allocated to spending identified with social development, in addition to including cuts to autonomous organizations, such as the Judiciary.
But the president highlighted that now universal pensions for older adults will amount to 6,000 pesos every two months instead of the current 4,800.

The project also drew criticism from the opposition for not contemplating a specific amount for the reconstruction of the southern state of Guerrero after the historic Hurricane Otis, which left 48 dead and 250,000 people homeless after breaking the intensification record in Mexico on October 25. .
López Obrador has defended that there are “unlimited” resources for reparation.
“I have to tell the people that they are using this unfortunate case of Acapulco for political purposes, those who are campaigning, those who want to return under their jurisdiction, the corrupt, those of the power mafia,” the president now expressed.
