“There we have a pending issue, that is a pending issue, because the public health system is very bad,” said the president during the inauguration of the Welfare Bank in Ocosingo, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
However, he assured that his government will guarantee the right to health for all Mexicans, one of his promises when he came to power in December 2018.
“We are going to guarantee, but in reality, really, the right to health. We are going to ensure that in all health centers, rural medical units, in hospitals there are general practitioners and there are specialists and medicines are not lacking and everything is delivered and the service is provided free of charge, ”he indicated.

“That made us stop the plan to rehabilitate health centers, hospitals, equip them, doctors, specialists, medicines, but now that the pandemic has subsided, we are carrying out a national plan to strengthen the public health system” , he emphasized.
The president pointed out that it has not been an easy matter since previous governments sought the privatization of health, and pointed out that for them both issues “they were privileges” and not “rights that the people have”.
Likewise, he stressed that previous policies led to a lack of specialist doctors and affirmed that his government has given more scholarships so that Mexican doctors can specialize abroad.
López Obrador said that even if his opponents do not like it, his government will hire Cuban doctors or doctors of other nationalities “so that there is attention and we do not lack specialists”; plus more medical schools will open.
Recruitment of doctors will be permanent; there are 2,253 hired: IMSS
During the first stage of the National Day of Recruitment and Hiring of Medical Specialists, the federal government has hired 2,253 applicants out of 4,494 accredited. This is a strategy that was launched to combat the lack of personnel in the national territory.
Within the framework of the press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo, recalled that from May 24 to June 3, the Specialist Physician Recruitment Day to cover 14 thousand 323 vacancies. During this period, 4,494 doctors attended and were accredited for the next stage of the process.
The head of Social Security explained that specialist doctors are still required and that at the end of the first round there are still vacancies in the main specialties. In Internal Medicine, 1,676 are needed, in Surgical Medical Emergencies, 1,583, Gynecology and Obstetrics, 1,331, Pediatrics, 1,366, Anesthesiology, 1,17 and General Surgery, 850.
He pointed out that the rest of the 2,241 doctors who were already accredited, there will be two more rounds. The second round is underway and will close on July 7, and the third will start on July 13.
“And once these two more stages are completed, the intention is to hire the largest number of medical specialists.”
The general director of the IMSS highlighted that on July 18 the call for vacancies will be opened permanently, but with a new modality. As soon as a doctor can accredit your ID, all the data they need and make your interest in one of the vacancies known.
