Amazon announced this Thursday morning that it will acquire the company One Medical. One Medical was founded in 2007 in San Francisco (United States), it is a pioneer in teleconsultation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amazon wants to “reinvent” health care
This isn’t the first time Amazon has dabbled in health. In 2018, it bought the online pharmacy PillPack, which now delivers prescription drugs at home. Also in 2019 during the Covid-19 pandemic, Amazon included a telemedicine service for its workers in Seattle.
After the success of the virtual consultations in Seattle, they made the decision to bring the service to all their workers in the rest of the country under the Amazon Care line. One Medical has 188 medical offices in 25 markets across the United States, which will now be part of Amazon’s health division.
With this acquisition, Amazon has managed to be present in all the industries that exist in the world. Amazon Health Services Vice President Neil Lindsay commented, “We believe that health care is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention.”
The purchase of One Medical is pending regulatory approval and the green light from One Medical shareholders.
