IMSS specialists warn about excess salt
Salt and sugar are necessary for the proper functioning of the body. The first is useful in maintaining the pressure of blood and extracellular fluids; the second provides the energy that the body needs to work properly.
However, ingesting them in excess can be linked to the development of chronic diseases and bring complications to the heart, kidneys and microcirculation, warned Dr. Óscar Castro Guevara, director of the Family Medical Unit (UMF) number 38 of the Mexican Social Security Institute. (IMSS) in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.
He pointed out that it is recommended to consume five grams of salt a day, including that already contained in food; however, some people eat up to 11 grams a day, more than double the allowed amount. As for sugar, the ideal portion depends on the condition and health status of each person, although it is common for the population to exceed its intake.
For this reason, he stressed, the number of patients with degenerative diseases such as hypertension and diabetes has increased, conditions that are also recorded at increasingly younger ages.
The IMSS doctor explained that excessive salt consumption causes fluid retention and weight gain. This forces the liver, kidneys and heart to work above their normal levels, which affects the cardiovascular system.
