Alejandra Robles “La Morena” He was born in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, in 1978. His hometown is one of the territories where there is a greater awareness of the third cultural root of Mexico: the African.
Until recently, Afro-Mexicans and their cultural legacy were not recognized and there were only cultural reminiscences in music, embroidery or carnival. However, today their identity is fully recognized and is protected by the Mexican Constitution along with the rights of native peoples.
Alejandra Robles is part of the movement that fights discrimination and seeks to promote Afro-Mexican peoples. To do this, Ella Robles makes use of her most powerful weapon: the beauty of her voice.
He began singing traditional music in Oaxaca, Veracruz and Guerrero, three of the states with the largest Afro-descendant population. Later, at the age of 15, she moved to the capital of Oaxaca to study at the School of Fine Arts of Oaxaca. Three years later she was accepted into the Paris Conservatory of Music.
In 2009 he participated in the campaign “For equality” along with other artists such as Lila Downs. Since then, she has become one of the most active voices in the struggle to give voice to the diversity of which Mexico is made up.
Alejandra Robles will celebrate Afroméxico
This September 15, Independence Day, Alejandra Robles La Morena arrives at the main square of the country to celebrate 213 years of Mexico as a sovereign country. It is important to note that the attendance of La Morena is of great symbolic importance, since different heroes of the homeland, including Morelos and President Vicente Guerrero, were Afro-descendants, although later government projects hid their identity.
The appointment is in the Zócalo of Mexico City, where Alejandra Robles will be accompanied by the Community Children’s Orchestra, made up of children and adolescents from all over the country. In her participation, La Morena will perform Afroméxico, the song that gives voice to Afro-Mexicans and which was originally recorded together with Sonora Santanera during the AfroCenso 2020.
