What are alebrijes?
The word “alebrije”
It was first used by Pedro Linares, the artist who made the cardboard judas that caught the attention of Diego Rivera. He created these animals in Mexico City. With it he named the amazing figures, made of papier-mâché, that would fill him with fame.
The meaning of the wooden alebrijes
For the Zapotecs, each human being comes into the world accompanied by an animal, a protective spirit that links them to the sacred. They call it nahual. We must thank the artisans for having learned to represent them as alebrijes.
