Akira has its origin in the homonymous manga by Katsuhiro Otomo that was published in the magazine WeeklyYoung from 1982 to 1990. The Kodansha publishing house compiled its more than two thousand pages in six volumes. The Panini publishing house publishes the work in Mexico.
Otomo himself directed and co-wrote the film adaptation released in 1988 in theaters in Japan. The creative genius persuaded some of the biggest companies like Bandai, Toho and Kodansha to spend an unprecedented budget on local animation. To create highly detailed sequences, TMS Entertainment’s production (Lupine III) opted for pre-recorded dialogues and ended up consisting of more than 160,000 animation cells and 2,212 highly complex scene plans.
Cinemex provides the following synopsis of Akira:
“A secret military project puts Neo-Tokyo in jeopardy when it turns a biker gang member into a devastating psychopath who can only be stopped by two teenagers and a group of psychics.”
It is worth mentioning that as Otomo worked simultaneously on both the manga and the film, both versions have substantial differences in character development and plot treatment. Although the results are equally fascinating in print or audiovisual format.
Will you dare to revive Akira on the big screen with Cinemex?
