Although we all know that dragon ball is Akira Toriyama’s most recognized work, it is not the only one for the Japanese mangaka. In the early 2000s, Sensei launched the Sand Land manga. And although it did not have the same impact as the Z Warriors, in mid-2022 they took this story to turn it into a movie.
It seems that their arrival was much more successful than they expected, because Disney+ has taken over the rights to streaming to transform it into a series that will arrive on the platform in 2024, according to a review MeriStation.
In principle, this 2024 premiere will be for Disney Japan. But already knowing this initiative is enough to get ready for a possible arrival in Latin America. The expanded story will arrive at some point, and so we can enjoy another Akira Toriyama series that is not Dragon Ball.
Sand Land is not Dragon Ball but it shares some elements. Through its official YouTube channel, Toho releases the trailers for the film Sand Land showing how Akira Toriyama’s strokes come to life in a production with a modern style.
The film was directed by Toshihisa Yokoshima (Amanatsu, COCOLORS) and featured the voice of Mutsumi Tamura as Beelzebub, while Kazuhiro Yamaji will voice Rao.
The video shows the story’s protagonist, the demon prince Beelzebub, joining Sheriff Rao on a quest to find a source of water to share with the inhabitants of the desert world where Sand Land takes place.
The official synopsis remains basically the same as when the first teaser for this film was shown:
“In a desert world where both humans and demons suffer from a great shortage of water, Beelzebub, the prince of demons, and Lao, the commissioner of a small village, team up and embark on an adventure to find the ghost spring, which is found somewhere in the desert.”
Sand Land is considered to be the first manga created and published by Toriyama after the conclusion of Dragon Ball. It was published in Weekly Shonen Jump between May and August 2000, and the chapters were later collected into a single volume.
