Fruit, vegetables and fodder led the growth of 0.9% in the agricultural production of Mexico at the end of 2022, when it totaled a volume of 271 million tons, reported this Thursday the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).
According to the dependency of the Mexican Government, this subsector represented 91% of the total volume generated in the year, as well as slightly more than half of the economic value of the branch, according to data from the Food and Fisheries Information Service (Siap).
The planted area in Mexico during the 2022 agricultural year was 20.75 million hectares, while the harvest area reached 20.23 million hectares.
The Ministry of Agriculture also highlighted the production of oranges, bananas, apples and lemons, which together registered 11.34 million tons.
Of this group of fruits, he explained, only the banana had an increase of 8.1% in its harvest, with 2.6 million tons, while the orange had an increase of 5.5% with a volume of 4.85 million tons.
For its part, the Mexican agency pointed out that red tomatoes led the vegetable subgroup with an increase of 2% and 3.39 million tons, followed by onion with 1.51 million tons and an increase of 4%.
For the forage item, alfalfa was the one that registered the highest increase, with 35.12 million tons.
Mexico produced 297.6 million tons of food at the end of last year, including fruits, vegetables and fodder.
According to the estimates of the Sader of the Mexican Government, the production trend will continue to rise, with a forecast of 301.3 million tons by the end of 2023, equivalent to an advance of 1.2%.
