From the list of songs in the soundtrack From Aftersun the ones that most caught our attention were:
“Lucky You” – The Lightning Seeds
“Lucky You” is track two from the band’s third album, Jollification (1993). A collaboration between Ian Broudie and The Specials lead singer Terry Hall (recently deceased).
To promote it, Broudie toured with the Lightning Seeds, however it was the success of his second single, “Change,” that prompted other releases such as “Lucky You,” “Marvellous,” and “Perfect.”
“My Oh My” – AQUA
From the debut album Aquarium (1997) by the Nordics AQUA comes this song that took advantage of the momentum of other more popular singles such as “Barbie Girl”, “Doctor Jones” and “Turn Back Time,” to make itself known.
The song also features a music video directed by Peder Pedersen, one of the Danish filmmakers with the most nominations for the Danish Music Awards and who has participated in video clips for other groups such as The Raveonettes. https://www.youtube.com/embed/OG0AvwM_QAI
“Road Rage” – Catatonia
“Road Rage” belongs to the second studio LP International Velvet (1998) by the Welsh band Catatonia. A production that would take them out of anonymity to place them at the top of the popularity charts, to later place them in the center of the musical universe with their 1998 Mercury Prize nomination.
This was the third single from the album to climb to number 5 on the “UK Singles Chart,” and the predecessor to “Mulder and Scully,” one of his best-known songs.
“Drinking in LA” – Bran Van 3000
From Glee (1997) “Drinking in LA” emerges, the first single and curiously the last to enter the LP of the Canadian band. The track reached number five on the “UK Singles Chart” and the TOP10 in other European countries.
In addition to appearing on the Aftersun soundtrack, “Drinking in LA” is included on the “Playing By Heart” (1998) and “Entropy” (1999) soundtracks.
“Tender” – Blur
“Tender” is part of the sixth studio album, 13 (1999), a song that was written by the four members of Blur about Damon Albarn’s breakup with Justine Frischmann (vocalist of Elastica). It was her eleventh TOP 10 hit and reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart.
“Tender” has become a classic and is a song that people like to sing during their live shows. In addition to the sundtrack of aftersunTender also appears in the end credits of Southland Tales (2007) and the Netflix series Sex Education.
“Tubthumping” – Chumbawamba
“Tubthumping” is the most important hit in the career of the British from Chumbawamba. The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and number six on the US Billboard Hot 100. And if that weren’t enough, “Tubthumping” was nominated for best single at the 1998 Brit Awards.
“Under Pressure” – Queen feat. David Bowie
“Under Pressure” is one of the best collaborations in rock history between Queen and David Bowie that appears on the album Hot Space (1982). The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the second number one for Queen and the third for Bowie. In 2021, it was ranked number 429 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The film also has a 17-track score composed by Oliver Coates, who in turn has worked on the music for other productions such as Stranger (2022) and Significant Other (2022).
