The Mexican government announced this Tuesday the end of the national emergency due to the covid-19 pandemic after three years in which the country was consolidated as the fifth with the most absolute deaths from the disease.
The person in charge of managing the pandemic in the country, Hugo López-Gatell, affirmed in the daily government conference that in Mexico conditions are met that the World Health Organization (WHO) established last Friday, when he lifted the international emergency declared on January 30, 2020.
Given that the characteristics that the WHO has considered to suspend the public health emergency of international interest are met, this decision has also been made for the country itself ”,
said López-Gatell, undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion.
For this reason, he added, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador “has signed a decree that puts an end to the validity of the original decree of March 23, 2020, in which the health emergency situation associated with covid-19 was established.”
The end of the emergency in Mexico comes when the country accumulates close to 7.59 million confirmed cases and almost 334,000 deaths from covid-19, the fifth highest number in the world.
During the pandemic, Mexico distinguished itself by not applying curfews or mandatory lockdowns, in addition to not restricting international travel.
While López Obrador, who contracted covid-19 three times, faced accusations of minimizing the disease, dismissing the use of face masks and resisting the purchase of vaccines for minors.
But López-Gatell now defended that in Mexico 95% of the population already has protection against the disease.
Regarding immunity, the conditions indicated by the WHO are also met in Mexico. Practically 95% of people have antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, either because we were infected and suffered from covid, or because we were vaccinated at the time, ”
held.
The undersecretary outlined that the Government will maintain a long-term management plan, which includes maintaining general recommendations, incorporating the covid-19 vaccine into the universal vaccination plan, and permanent monitoring.
López-Gatell asserted that “for months” the conditions for the reduction of covid-19 established by the WHO have been met.
Although there is a significant number of cases during epidemic waves, fortunately they are no longer accompanied by a significant proportion of people hospitalized, much less people who lose their lives as a result of the disease”,
