How do you protect your personal data? Do you use strong passwords and two-step access to your accounts? If not, you better start doing it. A few weeks ago, a hack to Buró de Crédito, one of the largest providers of credit information in Mexico, was disclosed. At first it was said that it had not gone to major, however, the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) confirmed it and began an investigation.
The worrying thing is that the successful cyberattack has managed to access confidential user data, such as names, credit card numbers, addresses and passwords.
“Buró de Crédito informs that, as part of its permanent information security review policy, it found, in some social networks, indications that suggested the illegal offer of information of natural persons that includes some data that coincides with what we managed in 2016 and that they would have been improperly obtained,” the Credit Bureau said in a statement.
Given the seriousness of the matter, the CNBV intervened in what happened in December 2022. Upon finding out, the Commission activated a follow-up and monitoring protocol, it reported. For its part, Buró de Crédito said that the stolen database corresponds to information from 2016 and that it immediately hired a company specialized in cybersecurity to evaluate its computer systems. So, in this way, the company affirms that the current systems have not been violated.
Also, the CNBV indicated that together with Banxico they will follow up on the actions implemented by the Credit Bureau, to protect the security of information and prevent future hacking of user data. Currently, they have realized that the stolen data is being sold on the Internet. deep web.
How to find out if your Credit Bureau data was put up for sale
After the hacking of the Credit Bureau, the institution has made a portal available to users to find out if their data was violated and put up for sale.
Take into account that you must have your CURP, RFC and a valid credit card on hand. Then follow these steps:
- go to this page
- Enter the data requested
- Fill out the form (you will have to indicate what credits you have)
- Click on continue
- It should appear if your user data was put up for sale
Lastly, after the Credit Bureau hack, it offers you two free services on its website: Alert me and Block. So, in this way, users will be able to have additional controls over their information. For example, when receiving alerts about loans or credits that banks want to grant, in addition to the blocking of your account and that your history cannot be consulted.
