AF Corse will compete with an Oreca 07-Gibson in the WEC LMP2 class in the 2022 season. Following in the footsteps of Team Penske in its link with the Porsche LMDh program, the Italian-born squad will be present in the silver category of the World Championship with the aim of preparing its jump to the queen class in 2023, in this case as a structure that will support Ferrari’s hypercar project. For that end, AF Corse will move the project that exists around the Ferrari # 87 of the LMGTE-Am class this season to LMP2, which will take François Perrodo back to pilot a prototype.
In the team project in LMP2 the interests of Ferrari and AF Cors are mixede for preparing his jump to the Hypercar category in 2023 with the existing link with François Perrodo, one of the pilots and clients of reference for AF Corse. For this reason, the jump to the LMP2 category of AF Corse will be made under the same ‘ingredients’ that exist around the Ferrari # 83 of the LMGTE-Am class and the three LMP2 drivers of the Italian team will be Nicklas Nielsen, Alessio Rovera and the aforementioned François Perrodo. For the Singaporean driver it will be his return to LMP2 after competing with TDS Racing between 2017 and 2019.
Like François Perrodo, the AF Corse team also has prior LMP2 experience after being the structure in charge of managing the Gibson-powered Dallara P217 used by Cetilar Racing in the 2019-20 WEC season. In addition, the formation also worked together with SMP Racing on the prototype program of the Russian structure in the past. This previous experience is not applicable to the rest of the members of the project, as Nicklas Nielsen has competed solely in single-seaters and GT vehicles, while Alessio Rovera has developed his entire professional career since 2016 with GT vehicles, achieving the Italian GT3 title in 2020.
