The always hot debate about which is better between iPhone and Android has been stoked once again by the boss of Instagram, Adam Mosseriwho spoke about it in response to a famous YouTube technologist, Marques Brownlee aka MKBHDwho had solicited people’s opinions on the best technology of the moment.
In accordance with Business Insider, Mosseri didn’t explain exactly why he considers Android superior, but his choice of words, in saying “now better”suggests that in the past you may have believed that Apple’s iOS had the upper hand.
Both Android and iOS operating systems have been successful since the first iPhones and Android phones were introduced in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
iOS dominance in the United States… but Android sweeps the world
The question of which operating system is more popular depends on whether you are talking about the United States or the world in general. According to data from Counterpoint Research, there are now more users of iPhones with iOS in the United States than there are users of Google Android.
iPhones first overtook Android devices in September 2022. By the first quarter of 2023, Apple is estimated to have had a 52% share of the US smartphone market, while Samsung was in second place with a 27% share. Google, Lenovo and other brands accounted for the remaining percentage.
For its part, Apple has not disclosed recent figures on the number of iOS users worldwide. However, during the Google I/O Developer Conference in 2023, Sameer Samat, Vice President of Android Product Management, announced that there were 3 billion active Android devices worldwide.
Statistical estimates suggest that Android, as the mobile operating system used by most phone manufacturers except Apple, has a much larger global market share than iOS, with a 70.8% share as of July 2023. Meanwhile, Apple’s iOS holds the second place with a 28.4% market share.
