- Strike by Hollywood actors threatens the production of movies and series around the world.
- Talks between SAG-AFTRA and the studios ended without agreement, and a decision is expected at the union’s national board this Thursday, July 13.
- Several international productions, including “Alien” and “Gladiator 2”, could be affected by the strike.
The talks between the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the Hollywood studios concluded at dawn on Thursday, July 13, without an agreement, which anticipates an imminent strike.
A national board is now expected to make the decision.
The meeting will be held this Thursday morning in Los Angeles.
The strike would stop the production and filming of movies and series involving any of the more than 160,000 union members around the world, especially in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
The strike, if it materializes, will be added to that of writers and screenwriters, which has been going on for more than three months.
This would be the first actors’ strike since 1980 and would coincide with the writers’ strike, something that hasn’t happened since 1960.
The union is demanding more income, but also for a formula that allows actors to receive royalties for the retransmission of films on streaming services, also for regulations on the use of artificial intelligence and other issues.
The impact of the strike, according to Varietywould be felt worldwide, since many international productions that are in the process of creation have affiliated actors.
Other artists are also expected to leave the projects, regardless of their union affiliations.
Which movies and series will be affected by the actors’ strike
Amid the uncertainty, some international productions have tried to finish filming before a possible strike, but it has not been easy.
One of the paralyzed productions is “alien”from FX, a series adaptation of the franchise written by Noah Hawley and Ridley Scott that is in pre-production in Thailand.
It is also feared for the series of gladiators by Roland Emmerich, “Those About to Die”starring Anthony Hopkins, who is filming in Italy.
Another production in trouble would be the third season of the HBO series “White Lotus”, also scheduled to be shot in Thailand.
SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee voted unanimously to recommend to the National Board a strike of the Producers-SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical/Streaming Contracts which expired July 12, 2023, at 11:59 pm PT.

Other major international shoots that would pause production due to the actors’ strike include the film Gladiator 2starring Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, which is filming in Morocco, and the sequel to “Mortal Kombat 2”, which is set in Australia.
The Sky and Peacock series “The Day of the Jackal”starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch, is filming in Central and Eastern Europe and is likely to take a break as well, they say in Variety.
