The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series defined a generation and we all thought it was going to be back when Activision Blizzard released a remake of the first installments with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 in September 2020. However, Tony Hawk revealed that Activision Blizzard canceled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake by Vicarious Visions.
Vicarious Visions was a development studio that brought us the remake of the Crash trilogy with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy before working on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, which was met with very positive critical reception from both press and gamers. Apparently this wasn’t enough to warrant a sequel with the 3+4 remake, which had been in development until VV merged with Activision Blizzard.

This Monday Tony Hawk said that he did not know what was going to happen in the future with the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games now that Vicarious Visions had been dissolved, since earlier this year the company merged with Blizzard to be called Blizzard Albany.
Through a Twitch broadcast, the professional skater revealed that the plan was to release a remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 after the success of the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, and they had even started working on the game before Vicarious Visions was taken over by Blizzard.
Even up to the day of the release date of [Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2]we were doing 3 and 4. And then Vicarious was taken over and they were looking for other developers, and that’s it.”
According to Hawk, Activision Blizzard did not trust Vicarious Visions for the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and decided to listen to proposals from other studios about what they would do with the THPS license. However, Activision Blizzard didn’t like any of the submissions it received “and that was that,” says Hawk, which is why there are currently no Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games in development.
