Although the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is known for being the column of public health in the country, it also has other virtues. Among them, it stands out that it is the largest specialist school that exists. There are currently 6,401 resident physicians in training in one of the 73 specialization courses in medicine, through training in classrooms, clinics, operating rooms and bedridden of the 25 units of Third Level of care.
The largest resident school
Through its 25 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) and its 11 Complementary Medical Units, they join the 351 medical units of second and first level of care as receiving units for resident doctors, and fulfill the mission of providing medical care of excellence to the right holders and carry out research within the field of health.
In addition, the Third Level units have been pioneers in various fields and considered as receiving units for resident doctors since their origins, by contributing like all the medical units of the Institute in the education and training of human resources for health, with the purpose of contribute to improving the quality of care through health promotion, prevention at different levels and rehabilitation.
In the UMAE and its Complementary Medical Units of the IMSS various chairs were started with which they contribute to the permanent development of medical knowledge and that eventually were transformed into postgraduate courses with university endorsements.
That is why today the IMSS is considered the public health institution that offers the larger clinical field at three levels of care for the training of human resources for health.
Not everything is the training of residents
In addition to the training of specialist doctors, in these third-level units, permanent education activities are also developed for the directive and operational personnel of the health area, and as part of the training of human resources, these highly specialized units also They are venues for student practices at the different IMSS nursing schools, as well as for specialization courses in Nursing.
Highly specialized medical care, in combination with the training of human resources for health, with a deep sense of social well-being, have been guiding principles that in more than six decades of existence have governed the work of Third Level hospitals in the IMSS.
