Unicef cataloged of? Unacceptable? advances to prevent, detect and treat HIV / AIDS among children and adolescents.
In commemoration of World AIDS Day (December 1), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) noted an alarming figure: in 2016 alone, 18 children were infected with HIV every hour , so it is estimated that in 2030 there are another 3.5 million adolescents with this disease.
Prevention, detention and treatment measures are “unacceptable”, in the words of Dr. Chewe Luo , head of HIV at Unicef. The expert maintained that the HIV / AIDS epidemic continues to be a threat to the lives of children and young people.
The indicators also show that there is a problem of gender inequality, since for every 4 boys with the virus and the disease, there are 7 girls with the same age.
More than 120,000 children under the age of 14 died in 2016 due to HIV-related causes. However, progress was also reported against this disease, for example, the eradication of mother-to-child infection , which since 2000 has prevented 2 million new infections.
