Deformation of the feet in children can cause problems in the back and legs.
One of the most frequent visits to the podiatrist is for having a flat foot since in many cases this is usually the part of the body where the parents do not pay much attention to it. However, this can have consequences for the child, such as discomfort when walking or limitation when walking.
The most frequent deformations or anomalies of the feet in children are:
Flat foot: It can cause pain and tiredness on the sole of the foot when walking. To correct it, it is necessary to use templates to normalize the footprint.
Pathological flat feet. They appear from the age of 8 and limit mobility and cause pain, which may require surgery.
Forefoot adduct: This abnormality can be identified when the anterior half of the foot faces inward. Although this abnormality can usually correct itself, it may also require special treatment depending on the grade, and can range from the use of special footwear or the use of night correctors to surgery.
Foot cavus or foot with a lot of bridge. Some symptoms are a pain when walking or standing, as more pressure is exerted on the area between the ankle and the fingers. In this case, it is recommended to use insoles to accommodate the soft parts and eliminate pressure points, which can be uncomfortable when doing sports.
Foot varus. This type of deformation of the feet occurs when the child’s heel is supported by the external part, which requires insoles to correct the footprint. Also, it is recommended to perform exercises for correction, such as walking on different surfaces, such as sand, grass and carpet.
Equine foot. The foot is turned inward and the top of the foot may even appear to be in place of the base. The affected foot, calf, and leg are smaller and shorter than on the normal side. Treatment will depend on the cause of the clubfoot and the child’s age. The correction should begin as soon as possible and includes the application of bandages, casts and, in many cases, surgery to lengthen the Achilles tendon.
Foot worth. This deformation occurs when the child rests his feet on the inside of the heel and the ankle goes inward. It is usual until three years, from this age it must be corrected with templates. The treatment will depend on the degree in which it is found and according to this it may be necessary to use physiotherapeutic exercises or by means of orthopedic insoles.
Observe your child’s posture
To detect any abnormality, it is necessary to monitor your child’s postures, from the way of standing, sleeping and sitting on the floor, as well as your baby’s first steps to detect any abnormality in time.
