It’s very unfortunate that, in this modern era of gaming, there isn’t much room for real-time strategy titles anymore. Games are still being made, of course, and there are plenty of excellent real-time strategy titles out there, but as a genre, it doesn’t seem to have the prominence it once did.
However, it continues to resist, and may even resurface at some point, since it seems that Minecraft could become a real-time strategy game. Or so says former Giant Bomb publisher and co-founder Jeff Gerstmann. In a recent stream on Twitch, Gerstmann has said that the Minecraft team is currently working on a real-time strategy spin-off.
Some details suggest that it will give players the ability to control a Steve-like character or unit, and will likely involve fighting piglins and possibly other enemies. There will also be some cutscenes as well as a story element. Apparently Microsoft is also testing it, and the spin-off is being developed under a code name, but obviously if the game is real, it’s not finished yet.
Taking into account that Minecraft is one of the highest-grossing video games of all time, with great longevity, it is likely that many cannot imagine it as anything other than a sprawling world where users can build whatever their imaginations desire.
At over ten years old, some younger players have even grown up with him, so seeing a spin-off take place on an isometric pitch, with strategy involved, might seem unusual to some.
