PlayStation VR headsets opened up new possibilities on PlayStation consoles, but few would argue that the first PSVR headsets really lived up to their potential. PS4 hardware limitations and still few VR game developers held PSVR back.
Now Sony hopes that the glasses PSVR2 build on what the first ones started, which means more prominent franchises coming to VR. One of those games could be a virtual reality adaptation of kill zoneif the rumors are true.
the rumor of Killzone VR comes from Bryan Paul in the latest PSVR Without Parole video. Paul has previously shared early information on what’s new for PSVR, and he’s back to detailing a Killzone VR game in development. Although Paul doesn’t know for sure if a Killzone VR game is currently in development, he does have details on an older Killzone project that he now believes could have become a Killzone VR game release. PSVR2.
Killzone VR is described as having started as an original PSVR game made by Supermassive Games. Supermassive had just wrapped up a series of PSVR games including Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, The Inpatient, and Bravo Team between 2016 and 2018. Apparently, Sony had also hired Supermassive to make Killzone VR during these years, drawing on their experience both with the PSVR glasses as with the remastering of Killzone for the PS3. Unfortunately, in 2019, Sony was not happy with the project and canceled it.
Paul says that while Supermassive’s development of Killzone VR was finished, Sony did not abandon the project. Instead, he turned Killzone VR development internally. That’s where Paul’s confidence in what happened ends and where he begins to speculate. He goes on to say that if internal development on Killzone VR started in 2019, it’s possible the project could be planned to be a launch game for PSVR 2.
