The first sign of the coming robot apocalypse could come from an artificial intelligence playing Chess. In a chess match between a nine-year-old boy and his robotic opponent, the robot caught the child’s finger and broke it after the boy took his turn early.
In a video circulating on social networks, you can see the robot placing the piece. The little boy The nine-year-old, whose name is Christopher, is quick to respond in a way that would no doubt have intimidated a human opponent. The robotic arm then seems to descend on the child’s finger with the implacable force of a machine devoid of feelings. Christopher’s cries of pain draw several adults to the scene, who manage to free him from the robot’s grasp.
“The robot broke the child’s finger“, said Sergey Lazarev, president of the Federation of Chess of Moscow. “This is of course bad“. The incident occurred at the Moscow Open on July 19. According to Lazarev, Christopher seemed to recover quickly. Despite having a cast on the finger of the little boy, returned to finish the tournament and even helped record the plays of other players. The parents, however, are seeking legal advice.
Speaking to the Russian news agency BAZA, Russian Chess Federation Vice President Sergey Smagin said the situation was “A coincidence” and that robot, which can play up to three simultaneous games, was absolutely safe. It also seemed to imply that Christopher disregarded precautions in playing against an automaton opponent.
“There are certain safety rules and the boy apparently violated them. When he made his move, he didn’t realize that he had to wait first.said Smagin. This is an extremely rare case, the first I remember“.
