According to a report by the Blockchain firm Chainalysis, cybercriminals managed to launder $8.6 billion in cryptocurrency in 2021. a figure that increased more than 30% in the year 2020, as announced on January 26, 2022 on its website by the newspaper LA REPÚBLICA.
According to the report, from the company Chainalysis Cybercriminals have locked up around $33 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017since for criminals cryptocurrencies are a more attractive way to launder money.
The firm commented “That the sharp increase in money laundering activity in 2021 was not surprising, given the significant growth in legitimate cryptocurrency activity like last year.”
Of this group of cybercriminals, about 17% of the $8.6 billion laundered was sent to marketplace funds and decentralized appswhere cybercriminals could easily attack users, who used traditional exchanges where they could convert funds into other cryptocurrencies through the blockchain.
“It is more difficult to measure how much fiat currency is derived from conventional crime. Traditional drug trafficking, for example, turns into cryptocurrencies to be laundered,” commented Chainalysis in reporting on it.
