Weed never dies.
In many respects we can say that we live in a good time for video games: indie titles are taking more and more market share, many of the big games are knowing how to renew themselves in an exciting way, and the possibilities of the new generation offer a new ceiling of possibilities in terms of performance. But nevertheless, Not all that glitters is gold, since, as a result of the pandemic in force since 2020, the new generation consoles, with a shortage of stock, have become the prey of speculators who profit by reselling consoles above their cost. Such is the current fever that the line of speculation is becoming, in certain cases, a pyramid.
Probably, more than one alarm goes off if we talk about money and pyramid, since the concept of “pyramid scam” is quite socially ingrained, but it is literally what we can find when looking for Next-Gen consoles. The Anglo-Saxon portal VGC, in fact, mentions the case of Jack Bayliss, a man who spends his time looking for stocks of consoles available in stores. When it finds them, it communicates it in a communication channel that people can access subscribing for £30 a month.
Well, some may think that one would have to be very desperate to pay to know stock, but we have one more link left. Speculative users are registered in this subscription channel, who buy all the consoles they can and then resell them at a premium. It may sound crazy to us, but Bayliss has over 1,500 subscribers who, at £30 a head, earns you up to £45,000 at the beginning of each month. Of course, this gentleman brags about his practices by sarcastically saying things like “I am creating young entrepreneurs” or “For me, the console is a luxury and paying £100 more is a marginal difference”.
Of course, Jack Bayliss does all the necessary mental stunts so as not to feel remorse for adulterating the free market and depriving so many potential customers of a product at its legal price. But nevertheless, there are so many people who do not hesitate to promote the black market, paying more money than a PS5 or an Xbox Series X is worth, the problem will not be solved until the factories can naturally cover the size of the demand.
