Who wouldn’t want to play Pokémon Red in Minecraft?
Yes, this giant Game Boy made in Minecraft by a user of Reddit is capable of running ROMS from classic Nintendo console games and, through a system of switches, it is possible to play Tetris, for example. The only problem is the FPS, check out this demo.
The most curious of all is that this has not been possible thanks to any mod, but to the programming language of Minecraft Java Edition. “Minecraft Java includes a programming language in “data packets” that can be used to make changes to the world,” explains one of the Reddit users. “The language included is “Turing complete,” a technical term that means that with enough memory and time, you can calculate anythingeven replicate the effect of any other type of programming language or computer”.
“Read a byte from memory, determines what that byte would mean to the Game Boy and then does the same. Repeat that in a loop and you have a Gameboy emulator,” he adds. The rest of the build is nothing more than a semi-transparent screen that mimics the Game Boy and a set of switches that act as buttons. “There are two ‘players ‘ in the video: the one in the main view is just sitting looking down recording. The other is in the top left ‘playing’ the emulated game, activating the sticks to represent each of the Game Boy buttons.”
Then, could Minecraft also emulate a PS5 game?. Yes, but only in theory. “Although it would be absurdly slow and take an impractical amount of time to develop, it is theoretically possible.” Minecraft will never cease to amaze us.
