For fans of the monster-catching RPG genre, there’s a new game from indie developer TRAGsoft. His name is Coromon, he is very similar to the first games of Pokemonand is now available at Switch.
After presenting a trailer and a demo of Coromon in January 2020, the game finally came out on Steam at the end of March this year. Eschewing the aesthetics of modern gaming PokemonCoromon is more of a throwback to the Game Boy Pokemon games, with retro pixelated graphics and old-style menus and UI.
Although the developers intended to release it simultaneously on Switch, they ended up delaying the launch. The reason they gave was that they had run into some issues with the online features and cross-platform multiplayer and wanted to make sure they released a great game.
It appears that although the issues took time to resolve, TRAGsoft was ultimately satisfied with the results and felt that Coromon was ready for Switch. There is definitely a market for a game like Coromon already. The franchise Pokemon is hugely popular with millions of gamers and fans, from mainline video games to spinoffs like Pokémon GO to TV shows and even physical products.
The games have progressed from their initial art style, and in some cases from the initial gameplay as well. Coromon can appeal to players who are fans of the old-school Pokémon game aesthetic, and keep them doing some of the gameplay aspects differently than Pokemon.
For example, players can adjust the difficulty set to give themselves more of a challenge, which is something Pokémon players have wanted for a long time.
Coromon is now available for iOS, Android, PC and Nintendo Switch.
