In just a few days, a one-year-old soap opera has been formed.
One of the biggest controversies and discussions that we are currently seeing in the video game industry comes hand in hand of the state of Perfect Dark and the situation of The Initiativethe studio behind the development of this title that was announced in 2020 during the broadcast of The Game Awards in style to the point of classify it as a quadruple A.
And given this, it must be said that putting this label on it could not have been a worse idea, since recently it is being seen that the title is going through several problems because it has had a great flight of workers to the point that VGC has collected in a report released during these days that almost half of The Initiative’s workers would have left, including both the game director and the design director, among many others.
All this in the last twelve months, which has left the studio in a very compromised position, being the main victim of this according to the Perfect Dark debates, of which it is already said that could be delayed more than expectedwhile the less optimistic speculate that it could even be canceled.
A journalist explains the situation of The Initiative
It must be said that the information is not official, so it will have to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, on Window Central’s recent Checkpoint podcast, featuring Miles Dompier and Jez Cordon, the situation of The Initiative and Perfect Dark has been the subject of debate, being the latter the one who has spoken of the current situation of the study after having spoken with several internal sources. And it is that, according to him, the problems would come from not reach agreements on how to work and the staff structure.
It must be said that The Initiative was a studio created in such a way that it intended to move away from the conventional to avoid measures such as crunch, so that a more democratic way of making video games was sought on a plane of maximum equality. and right here was where it failed, since this prompted two thoughts for development.
On the one hand it was intended to hire more people, while on the other hand there were workers with the idea of doing an independent game, but of high quality. Making an analogy, Kena: Bridge of the Spirits would be an example of the latter, which clashed with that label of being a quadruple A game. It could be said that it was its undoing.
It was from this point that the exits from the study were carried out, which, despite everything, according to Corden, start to see green shoots, since it seems that it is recovering. Be that as it may, we will have to see what the passage of time tells us. Otherwise, Perfect Dark is currently in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
