The return to the Spanish screens of ‘Evil’ with its season 2 has not been the only dose of terror that arrives from Robert and Michelle King. Shot during the pandemic and imagining a new confinement, ‘The Bite‘(which we can see from today on Movistar +) a new variant of COVID-19 is imagined. This time his infection turns us into zombies.
In the center is Rachel (Audra McDonald), a doctor who runs her consultation online, and her neighbor Lily (Taylor Schilling), a dominatrix trying to convince her slaves that her BDSM sessions are as valid on screen as they are in person. In this they will be when a strange variant of the virus begins to appear and Rachel attends a case of a strange bite. It’s the start of the pandemic zombie apocalypse.
‘The Bite’ (billed at the time as ‘The Second Wave’) It is created for a small platform (Spectrum) and it shows. Beyond the restrictions of the time of filming, the fiction, of six episodes, transpires that being made with four hard but with a lot of love and professionalism on the part of creators, directors and actors.
A comment on King brand news
Over the years, King have proven themselves a lot when it comes to commenting on the news (There we have ‘The Good Fight’) and their taste for satire was demonstrated a few years ago with that mix of body invaders and politics that was ‘BrainDead’.
Here they remain faithful to their school and use this zombie apocalypse to take sharp bites into the management of the pandemic by both institutions and citizens. Nevertheless, the pandemic factor plays something against you.
She is a daughter of COVID-19 (both because of how it was filmed and what it touches) and as such it fails in certain things: the construction of the world is somewhat limited and the characters (and their personal dramas) are outlined somewhat by brush strokes.
This causes that, unlike the rest of the King series, there is some lack of purpose (or heading) in history. There is no reflection, which is somewhat disappointing speaking of who we are talking about, but that does not take away an iota of fun to the proposal.
Because, what do you want me to tell you, but I’ve had a really good time with ‘The Bite’. Although there are gags that do not end up working too well, the series is, in short, a small but quite effective proposal. An ideal plan to make a Halloween not terrifying but to have a great time.
