The Xbox subscription service is singled out and compared to Spotify.
A few years ago you would have thought that Microsoft was willing to throw money away when they announced not only that they would release their games on PCbut also, would they have a subscription service through which we could enjoy these same games on the same launch day, which many pointed out as crazy based on the fact that nobody would buy their consoles or their games like that.
Time has ended up proving Phil Spencer right, who today can be seen proud as Xbox Game Pass has millions of users around the world, thereby giving rise to the fact that, in addition, it has become the most loved and appreciated subscription service by many players. In fact, it has been seen that Sony has had to make a move with the renewal of PlayStation Plus to stand up to it.
Subscription services would not be so good for video games
However, it never seems to rain to everyone’s taste, as former Microsoft executive Ed Fries, who was responsible for launching the first Xbox in 2004, has spoken out about this new service, comparing Xbox Game Pass to Spotify and admitting that it is something that scares him.
The justification he gives for this is that when Spotify came along, it cut annual revenue in the music industry in halfsince it is made so that people do not buy more songs, noting here that the same service should not be created for video games because it is a much more fragile market than the one mentioned above.
In fact, he has even mentioned that this almost happened in the past in both the early 1980s and mid 1990s with educational games. However, he points out that he likes the services as a clientthis being the one that gets the most out of it, but not as much as an industry executive.
It should be noted that It is not the first time that the Xbox Game Pass has been pointed out as something that could cause problems in the future, since, although it is true that not so many games will be sold, users of the service are delighted with it. We will have to wait to see if the bubble hopefully does not burst.
