Although Microsoft recently offered its users of the original Surface Duo the update to Android 11, they may soon have a much more interesting option to the Google operating system. And it is that a developer is taking it upon himself to run Windows 11 on Microsoft’s first Surface Duo.
as it has been sharing these days Gustave Monce, developer involved in WOA (Windows on ARM) projects, you managed to run the ARM64 version of Windows 11 on your original Surface Duo.
Before Android, Surface Duo was going to include Windows 10X
Microsoft had several phases with its Surface Duo before opting for Android as its operating system. And it is that at first it was going to have Windows 10X, an operating system oriented to tablets and devices with double screen, however it was canceled before the release of Windows 11. Microsoft also tested before that with Andromeda OS, another system that they tested with the Lumia 950 and that it was destined to come to the next generation of Microsoft devices. In the end, all these projects did not come to fruition, and Android was the fastest and most reliable solution at the time.
Monce has made the Surface Duo go through another phase again: running Windows 11, something that he has been detailing step by step on his Twitter account. The last of the images that can be seen on his profile at the time of writing this article is the one with a Surface Duo with the Windows 11 logoshowing that the operating system has already completed its installation on the device.
A whole group of developers focused on installing Windows on ARM devices
It is not the first time that this developer brings us curious projects like this. And it is that before putting himself in the hands of this Surface Duo he was already able to demonstrate how did you install Windows 10 on a Lumia 950XL as part of his LumiaWoA project. The existence of these projects, maintained by independent developers, is also due to the fact that Microsoft offers ARM versions of its operating systems, which by their nature (and with work), can become compatible with a good number of current mobile devices. In Github there is a page dedicated to this type of project, including the one we have discussed about LumiaWoA.
There are no details about the operation and performance of this system on the Surface Duo yet. However, it is very likely that the developer keep offering images and information about this interesting project.
