The bear market may continue to rage, but that won’t stop bitcoin (BTC) shooters, creators, and filmmakers from producing new content.
In March, the first edition of the Bitcoin Film Festival was held in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The festival brought together bitcoin advocates and movie lovers from around the world to see some of the best-known bitcoin movies and documentaries..
Held in the Kinoteka theater of the emblematic Palace of Culture and Science, the Bitcoin Film Festival celebrated the growing global influence of bitcoin and highlighted the burgeoning cultural movement that underpins the digital network. It was attended by some talents from the first Bitcoin movement film festival, BitFilm in 2015, such as Tomer Kantor, who continue to shoot bitcoin-centric films.
Cointelegraph released The Bitcoin Farmer, a short documentary about bitcoin mining using only renewable energy in Ireland. A roundtable discussion followed with Jackson Dumont, Cointelegraph’s director of video; Joe Hall, global reporter; Pierre Corbin, co-founder of the Bitcoin Film Fest; and Mark Morton and Vince Giltinan of Scilling Digital Mining.
Pierre Corbin told Cointelegraph that he and co-founder Tomek Kolodziejczuk organized the Bitcoin Film Festival because it’s a “cool idea” for the community.. Although the film festival was a valuable means of introducing Poles to bitcoin, Pierre explained that the cryptocurrency “has been very popular here in Poland because of the Ukrainians who came here because of the war.”
Poland borders Ukraine, and up to 25% of the Polish immigrant population is Ukrainian. Early in the war, bitcoin donations skyrocketedand Corbin explains that people on the ground used this decentralized tool:
“The human rights foundation helped them [a los ucranianos] to transfer their wealth to bitcoin, helping them cross the border from here to Poland and then accompanying them in the process of getting their money out of bitcoin ATMs, because Poland is the country in Europe with the most bitcoin ATMs.”
Kolodziejczuk got down to business to organize the world’s first bitcoin film festival in November 2022. He wanted to meet Corbin and screen his film, The Great Reset and the Rise of Bitcoin, at a local bitcoin meetup. However, the idea snowballed. Their meeting and subsequent meetings led to the screening of bitcoin films from around the world in one of the most iconic buildings in Eastern Europe..
From documentaries shot in El Salvador, like Bond to Unbind, to a snapshot of bitcoin’s impact on people’s lives in The Human B, the film festival showcased the latest and most notable filmmaking efforts.. Corbin explained the selection process:
“If you select the right movies that tell the right stories, you will bring people from outside to understand bitcoin from the angle that we want them to understand.”
A crowdfunding campaign was carried out via the Bitcoin Geyser Fund crowdfunding campaign, in which Remi Baillieux’s The Satoshi Mystery won the community voting segment. For his part, Corbin raised satoshis (Bitcoin’s smallest denomination) for his second bitcoin documentary, The Fight for the US Dollar.
The film festival also took advantage of a libertarian conference held in Warsaw the same weekend.. Libertarians are in favor of minimizing government meddling in everyday life, and were early adopters of bitcoin.
The organizers of the Bitcoin Film Festival are considering whether to change the location for the 2024 edition or keep the festival in Warsaw.. Although bear markets are undoubtedly for building, it seems that they are also a good time for filming.
